Why the name A Green Square?
GitHub is the largest open source code repository on the web. Their profile pages famously contain a contributions calendar that has a square for each day of the year, arranged in a grid of 7 day weeks.
When a user makes a commit (an atomic contribution to a GitHub repository), this is indicated visually as a green square in the calendar.
Developers aim to "keep their GitHub profile green" to indicate that they are keeping up with the practice of coding.
Not all commits are created equal, of course. A commit can be a change of a single character, or something that updates dozens of files and hundreds of lines of code.
But glancing at someone's GitHub profile to see how green their graph is a common way to check if someone has been active on the site lately.
The name A Green Square is meant to remind you to learn a little bit each day and keep your coding skills sharp.
